In 1941, during the opening period of the war in the East, the Soviet Air Force (WS - RKKA) used recently introduced Pe-2s together with the Arkhangel'sky Ar-2 dive bombers. The Ar-2 (as it has been designed since January 1941) had been developed from the SB-2 bomber taking into account the experience of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). The prototype was built under the SB-RK designation in 1939 as an aerodynamically refined version of the SB-2 and SB-2bis (SB-3) designs.
In its production form, the Ar-2 was powered to two 1100 hp (808 kW) Klimov M-105R twelve-cylinder in-line engines. Its bomb load was 1000 kg and defensive armament consisted of three 7,62-mm SKAS machine guns. The wing was provided with dive brakes similar to that of the Pe-2. Production of the Ar-2 began in 1940, and during 1941 200 machines was delivered to combat units. As production of the faster Pe-2 started in the same time, the Ar-2 saw only limited service.
