ScaleSpokes - Wheels
Tip for installing resin tires:
Scale Spokes offers special accessory packs with resin tires and photo-etched parts. The difference with the resin tire is that it is flattened.
After removing the rubber tire from the rim and cleaning up the resin tire, test fit it to the rim. Additional sanding may be necessary.
Once you are satisfied with the fit, place the resin tire on a flat surface and gently lower the rim assembly into the tire. Handle only by the edges of the rim since pressure on the hub or spokes can warp the assembly.
To seal the tire to the rim, you can put a bead of Pledge Floor Way with Future between the two.
Tip for fitting rubber tires:
Due to the scale size of these wheels, in rare cases, the rubber tire may be slightly larger than the rim.
To get a perfect fit, here’s what you do: after you roll the tire off the rim, make a cut through the tire with a new blade in your hobby knife – you now have a tube shaped piece of rubber. Wrap the tube around the rim and carefully measure where to cut the excess. Cut or sand the end to the proper size. Glue the tube back onto the rim with CA.
If necessary, fill the cut with thin CA or filler. Sand and paint as necessary.
You should now have a perfectly fitting tire.
Useful tip on changing rubber tires on the wheels:
Each package comes with two different color rubber tires, one of which will already be on the rim. These wheels are fragile and changing the tires can cause damage to the hub and spokes if you are not careful. By holding only the edge of the rim, you can easily remove the tire, but installing a different tire is more difficult.
Here’s what we recommend: carefully roll the tire off the rim with your fingers. Soak the new tire in any petroleum based liquid for five to ten minutes. Since the tires are rubber, they will expand. Remove the tire from the liquid, dry off all excess fluid, and gently place it over the rim. In about 20 to 30 minutes, the tire will shrink back to its original size. You now have a new color wheel assembly.
Scale Spokes tire options:
Each set, offers two different color tires: one white and one black. They are actual rubber tires which can fade in sunlight. The sun can discolor the tires and even cause them to crack. Be careful and monitor their progress if you use this aggressive technique to give an aged look to the tires. As another aging method, you can simply paint them to achieve a weathered and worn look.
Another option for the tires comes in our “Accessory” packages. Here, we have flattened resin tires which can be painted any color to fit you model (black, light gray, dark gray, white, pink, etc.). Also included in the accessory package are decals for the tire manufacturer’s name which will definitely add to the realism of the tire. Finally, some photos indicate an aircraft may have had different color tires on each landing gear. Choosing this effect adds artistic interest to your finished model.
Wheel coating:
cale Spokes wheels are made from aluminum and the spokes from copper, so it will be very easy to change their colors. You have several options: display them as is; apply a chemical coating (Birchwood Casey, many color options) to age or discolor the wheel and spokes; or you can simply paint them any color of your choosing.
